I disagree with that. Defensively Ellsbuy, Cameron, and Drew have 2 gold gloves between them and both belong to Cameron whom they just acquired.
Offensively Cameron is a career .250 hitter that often gets benched due to long cold streaks. Drew is decent but can't seem to play a full season. Ellsbury is the best of the 3. Ellsbury will more than likely hit .300 again as well as steal 60 to 70 bases.
I think the Angels outfield of Hunter, Abreu, and Rivera is one of the best that has been over looked.
Defensively they have 10 gold gloves between them. Offensively they hit .290+, average 20+ hr's, and 85 to 90+ rbi's.
Your instincts serve you correctly. Gammon was being biased. The Red Sox have a decent outfield but it's not the best in the AL let alone all of baseball.

The Phillies have the most offensively impressive in MLB, and are defensively very strong with Werth & Victorino:
Werth (.268/36/99/20 SB), Victorino (.292/.358/10/102 R/25 SB), Ibanez (.272/34/93)
#2
The Dodgers are also great, offensively:
Ethier (.272/31/106), Kemp (.297/26/101/34 SB), Ramirez (.290/19/63)
#3
The Mets have a good one:
Bay (.267/36/119), Beltran (.325/10/48), Franccoeur (.280/15/86)
NL HONORABLE MENTIONS:
I like the Astros OF (aside from Lee being a terrible defensive LF):
Pence (.282/25/72), Bourn (.285/.354/97 R/61 SB), Lee (.300/26/102)
The Cubs, if healthy, should do great:
Soriano (.241/20/55), Nady (2008 - .305/25/97), Fukudome (.259/11/54), Byrd (.283/20/89)
AMERICAN LEAGUE

Angels are very, very good, especially offensively:
Abreu (.293/15/103), Hunter (.299/22/90), Rivera (.287/25/88)
#2
Red Sox are solid, if Drew can stay healthy enough to play 140 games in RF:
Ellsbury (.301/8/94 R/70 SB), Cameron (.250/24/70), Drew (he'll play 140 games at best)(.279/24/68)
#3
Rangers have a chance to be good, if Hamilton rebounds and Murphy keeps improving:
Murphy (.269/17/57), Hamilton (.268/10/54), Cruz (.260/33/76/20 SB)
AL HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Indians
Choo (.300/20/86), Sizemore (.248/18/64 - In 2008, healthy, he produced 33 HR, 38 SB)
Mariners have a chance to be good:
Ichiro (.352/11/88 R), Frank-Guit (.283/18/70), Byrnes (if healthy): his last healthy season was 2007: (.286/21/83/50 SB)
I also say the Rays (Crawford/Upton) are better than the Yankees (Granderson/Swisher).
